As part of the Ateliers Jean Nouvel team, Gilles Delage took part in the conception of the City of Culture of Galicia.
In 1999, the culture ministry of Xunta de Galicia, starts an international competition to build in Santiago de Compostela a large-scale cultural complex including 2 museums, an opera house, a theatre, an auditorium and a large library.
The site is a hill overlooking the holy city, where the pilgrims’ paths are still vibrant. The architectural concept is to create a permanent trace carving the hill but respecting its nature. A blade of light is tucked inside the tumulus, allowing panoramic views to the historical city and meandering paths throughout the cultural spaces.
The moor landscape remains, the architecture invites you to dive into the lightness of the glass building and into the shade of the troglodytic places.
